Fall Class Party

Book Character Day

On October 31st, First grade will be having Book Character Day. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character. They must bring the book with their character in it them on that day. These are not to be Halloween costumes such as ghost witches etc.. All the teachers will be dressing up also. We will also be having a Character Parade around the school. This will be a great experience for your child. I hope all participate!!

Great First Few Days

The first days of school have been fantastic!!We have shared our show and tell bags and we have launched Daily five and Literacy Cafe. We have began to work on writing. They have already written story about their summer vacactions and did a geat job. I am looking forward to more wonderful days ahead. I have a lot more fun things in store for us this year.

o 1 wide-ruled spiral notebook note book (put name on front)
($.20 -Walmart)
o 2 composition book (black and white front-)(40 cents- Walmart)
o 1 large pencil pouch (put name on it)
o 1 pkg. pencils
o 1 box of crayons( 24, 48 , 64 count or twistables)
o 1 pkg. glue sticks
o 1 pair of scissors
o 1 ream of copy paper
1 box of kleenes=x
1 pack of stickers

GIRLS - 1 box of gallon size Ziploc bags(generic is fine)
BOYS – 1 bag of candy (no hard candy or lollipops)

There will be a Wish Tree in our classroom at Open House. Please take 1 or 2 stars or apples from it and donate to our classroom. Thank you!!

Welcome to a new First Grade year!!

Welcome to the Home of the Buzy Bees! I am so excited that a new year is about to begin! Our classroom blog will be used throughout the year. Please add it to your favorites. This blog will be used and updated daily and weekly. It will be your look into our classroom. I will be posting spelling words, homework, pictures of things we are doing in class. Please check the blog frequently or subscribe to follow our blog. Updates will be emailed. We are going to have a great year this year. I am adapting more technology into my curriculum and am very excited to share it with my brand new class along with a new reading method. Once I get a class list the day we go back. I will post it on here for your child to see who is in their class. I am looking forward to a great school year.

Hi Everyone!! I am Joanna Powell. I have been a first grade teacher at Tanglewood Elementary for 14 years. I received my Master's Degree from UNCP in 2000. I love my job and love teaching first grade.

I am originally from Clarion, Pennsylvania. I moved here in 1997 and have been here in Lumberton ever since. I met my husband, Marvin who was stationed at Fort Bragg in 2000. He is now a SSG in the NC National Guard and works on Bragg as a Guard Technician.We were married in 2002. We have two sons. Noah is a third grader at Tanglewood and Eli is 15 months old.

We live on Walnut street and are enjoying our sons as they grow. We are active members of Vertical Church.
